Lugworm

black lugworm

Lugworm prefer clean ground - either sand or a sand and mud mixture. They live in u shaped burrows right up to the tide line and it's usually possible to dig for them even on the lowest neap tides. Their presence is easily visible on the surface as they throw up a mound of sand or cast when they burrow.

In a line with the cast is a depression in the sand, 'the blow'. There are two species of lugworm - the tough black lugworm and the softer common blow lugworm. Blacks can be dug with either a small spade or a bait pump and are an ideal cod bait.

Common lug is usually dug with a flat tined fork such as that for digging potatoes and is a good all round bait for a number of species.

The method of digging is to move a small fork of sand from in front of the depression and then dig behind the mound to lift up the worm in its burrow.
